KNOWLEDGE OF LOCAL LEADERS REGARDING DATE
PALM FROND SILAGE PRODUCTION AND USE AS ANIMAL
RATION IN AL-DAKHLA AND AL-KHARGA DISTRICTS OF

| Abstract |
The main objective of the research was primarily to identify local
leaders' knowledge concerning production and use of date-palm frond Silage
as animal ration in AI-Dakhla and AI-Kharga districts of AI-Wadi AI-Gadid.
Affiliated with the main objectives, some other objectives were formulated: to
identify local leaders' knowledge extent regarding knowledge related to date-
palm fronds; to identify local leaders' knowledge extent regarding knowledge
related to date-palm frond silage production; to identify different factors that
led local leaders to consider date-palm frond silage in feeding farm animals;
to identify local leader's attitude (support) towards production and use date-
palm frond silage as an animal ration; and to identify the most critical
obstacles, perceived by the research participants, that encounter local leader
in producing date palm frond silage; and to identify different local leaders'
suggestions to cope with obstacles of date-palm frond silage production.
the research was conducted in AI-Dakhla and Al-Kharga districts of
AI-Wadi Al-Gadid (the New Valley Governorate). during the period December,
2014 - February, 2015. The research data were collected, from 90 local
leaders (Total local leader's population) living in 10 villages of the. two
selected districts, during the period January-February, 2015. Observation
and focus group discussions (10 focus group meetings in participation with 90
local leaders distributed in a rate of 10 leaders each) were used in collecting
the research data, and a written questionnaire index was also used, in
addition to the written questionnaire itself. Frequency tables, percentages
were used in analyzing the obtained research data.
The main research findings came as the following:
1.The majority of the research participants showed all knowledge needed
concerning date-palm fronds and tools needed for production of date-
palm frond silage.
2.About 86% of the research participants were knowledgeable regarding
different factors that led to considering date-palm frond silage as animal
ration.
3.About84% of the research participants were of positive attitude regarding
producing and use of date-palm frond silage as animal ration.
4.The research participants perceived 11 obstacles that hinder production
and use of date-palm frond silage. In addition, the research participants
viewed some suggestions for encountering the perceived obstacles
regarding producing and use of date-palm frond silage.
The research findings were discussed in more detail within the
research paper .
