Abstract |
This experiment was carried out to study the effect of using different sources of roughage, bean straw (BS), corn stalks (CS) and rice straw (RS) with high level of concentrate feed mixture (CFM) on animal performance and carcass quality. Eighteen growing Rahmani male lambs with an average body weight of 20 kg were randomly divided into 3 equal groups and were group fed on the following three tested rations :1- 25% Bean straw +75% CFM 2-25% corn stalks + 75% CFM or 3-25% Rice straw + 75% CFM for 182 days according to NRC (1985) recommendations. The results can be summarized as follows:
The TDN intake was insignificantly higher with CS diet than BS or RS rations (763.9vs 707.7 and 701.9 g\ h\ d), respectively. While the CP intake was higher with BS than CS and RS diets (244vs240 and 235 g\h\d), respectively. Animals of the group fed on BS diet had higher final body weight (52.5Kg \h) than those of group fed on CS (51.6Kg\h) or RS diet (50.4 Kg\h). the highest daily gain (179g\h) was obtained with BS diet group than CS or RS diet fed groups (174 and 164 g\h), respectively.
Dressing % of fasting body weight values showed that animals in groups fed on BS and CS diets were similar and both were higher than those fed on RS (50.6, 50.3 and 46.4 %), respectively. The highest weights of ribs samples and longisium dorsi(LD) muscle were for animals fed on BS diet, being 1.13 and 0.56kg, followed by those fed RS diet (0.94 and0.41 kg) or CS diet (0.92 and0.36 kg ). The differences between them were not significant, except that LD muscle for animals fed BS diet were significantly heavier. The different diets did not affect most blood parameters of the animals, but the serum albumin level was decreased with increasing sampling time with CS ration. in addition GOT activity was significantly the lowest for the RS group. The activity significantly increased at the end of the experiment with all diets.
It could be concluded that performance of lambs of the three groups were similar and was not affected by the type of roughage when given at 25: 75 of roughage to concentrate ratio in the present study.
