Abstract |
The present work was carried out to study the effect of three non-specific immunostimulants used as food and water additives, vit. E–selenium and B- glucan were used as water additives, zinc as air dry ration additive, for sheep vaccinated with foot and mouth disease vaccine. The effect of such additives was tested in 6 groups of sheep for 4months post vaccination with FMD vaccine. All additives were used one mouth before vaccination, continued 4 months post vaccination for B-glucan and E-selenium and one mouth for zinc. The 1st 2nd and 3rd group of sheep received vit. E-selenium alone B-glucan alone and the two additive at the same time respectively in the drinking water. The 4th animal group received zinc in the dry ration. A 5th was also vaccinated but kept as test control receiving no foot additives. Each animal group was subdivided on the time of challenge(21 days post vaccination) into 2 subgroups (a) and (b) where subgroup (a) was left to follow up the immune levels of FMD antibodies up to 6 mouths post vaccination and the subgroup(b) was challenged group of 3 sheep. Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay and neutralization test revealed that all additives have an immunosorbent assay and serum neutralization test revealed that all additives have an immunostimulant effect where they showed higher titres of antibodies in animals receiving treated ration and water then the control group. However , combination of Vit. E- selenium and B-glucan , resulted in the highest levels of induced antibodies and prolonged duration of immunity. So , it could be concluded that such additives should be added to sheep water to obtained best result of vaccination against FMD
