Abstract |
The present study was conducted to evaluate the nutritional value of spent wheat straw (SWS) through digestibility trials, and the effect of feeding spent wheat straw (SWS) on growth performance during the growing period of lambs.
Forty cross breed ewes and lambs (20 ewes and 20 lambs ) were divided into 4 group (5 ewes and 5 lambs in each) to evaluate the following rations : c (control); 80% concentrate feed mixture (CFM) of NRC (1986) requirements +wheat straw (WS) ad lib; ration T1: 80% CFM + spent wheat straw(SWS) ad lib; ration T2 : 60% CFM + SWS ad lib; and ration T3: 40% CFM+SWS ad lib.
The main results were as follows:
The crude protein and ash contents were increased while CF decreased in ration as a result of increasing spent wheat straw intake.
The digestibility of DM, CP, CF, EE and NFE for ewes and lambs increased (P<0.05) for ration T1 and then decreased gradually with decreasing concentrate feed mixture in the rations and increasing spent wheat straw intake.
The daily body gain (kg) were 0.172, 0.176, 0.169 and 0.156 and feed conversion were 8.10, 8.05, 8.11 and 7.48 (kg/DM/kg gain) for rations C1, T1, T2 and T3 respectively were nearly equal except for ration T3.
The economic efficiency for the rations using spent wheat straw were the best than the control.
It could be concluded that spent wheat straw is good quality and could replace concentrate feed mixture up to 40% for feeding growing lambs.
Keywords: spent wheat straw, mushroom by-product, growth performance, feeding value, lambs.
