Abstract This work was performed to investigate the effect of season, type of birth and sex on birth weight and neonatal mortality in Saidi lambs. Besides, studying the influence of these factors on concentrations of serum immunoglobulin, total protein, albumin, globulin, glucose and urea. The study covered two lambing seasons (winter and summer). Lambs born during winter were significantly heavier (p>0.001) at birth (3.2 kg) than those born during summer (2.8 kg). Mortality rate during summer lambing was higher (12.2 %) than in winter (10.6 %). The overall percentage of the early neonatal mortality (within 48 hrs of age) was higher (12.2 %) in summer than in winter (1.5 %). The average birth weight of surviving lambs or lambs died during the period from 48 h to 8 weeks were significantly (P> 0.001) heavier (3.2 kg) than those died within the first few hours after birth (1.6 kg). Single lambs tended to have significantly (P> 0.0001) heavier birth weights (3.7 kg) than twins and triplet (3.1 and 2.3 kg, respectively). Mortality rate of male lambs was higher (7.5 %) than female ones (4.8 %), although they were of similar birth weights. The overall concentration of serum IgG in lamb was not significantly affected by lambing season, type of birth or lamb sex. Serum IgG levels during the period from 0 h (before suckling) to 72 h ranged between 9.9 to 11.3 mg!ml in both seasons. Serum IgG concentrations of suckling lambs tended to increase with time and reached a peak at 24 h after birth. The total protein concentration was significantly higher (P> 0.0001) in lambs born during summer (8.3 g/ dI) than those born in winter (7.8 g/ dl), where its level increased significantly during the first days in both seasons, reached the peak at 24 h after birth. Female lambs tended to have significantly higher protein and globulin concentrations (8.1 and 3.8 g/ dl, respectively) than males (7.8 and 3.7 g/ dl). The concentrations of glucose were significantly higher (P> 0.0001) in lambs born during winter season (81.4 mg/ ml) than in summer (64.5 mg/ ml). Single lambs tended to have significantly (p> 0.0001) higher glucose levels (76.8 mg/ ml) than twins (69.02 mg/ ml). Moreover, the concentration mean of serum glucose in male lambs (73.6 mg/ ml) was significantly higher (P> 0.0001) than in female lambs (72.3 mg/ ml). The concentration of urea in lamb's serum was significantly influenced by seasons, type of birth and lambs sex. Serum urea levels started to increase after suckling reaching a peak at 24 and 48 h in lambs born in winter and summer, respectively. Key words: Lamb, season, type of birth, lamb sex, mortality, birth weight, immunoglobulin (IgG), total protein, globulin, albumin, glucose, urea.
