English : Influence of supplemental lactose as prebiotic and super bio-buds as probiotic on Japanese quail laying hens performance, egg quality, digestion, villi height and intestinal microbiology
Abstract A total of 150 Japanese quail laying hens at 14 wk of age were fed a basal diet, or a basal diet supplemented with 1 or 2 % prebiotic lactose and 0.1 or 0.2 % probiotic Super Bio-Buds in a completely randomized experimental design. Data indicated that the supplementation of the feed with 1 or 2 % lactose and 0.1 % Super Bio-Buds recoded the best (P <0.01) improvements in egg production, egg mass and feed conversion ratio, as compared to the control hens. Also 0.2 % Super Bio-Buds supplementation resulted in a significant increase in these traits but followed the aforementioned treatments. Egg specific gravity, digestibility coefficients of crude protein and ether extract were significantly (P< 0.0 1 or 0.05) increased due to the supplementation of 1 % lactose or 0.1 % Super Bio-Buds. Shell weight percentage and shell thickness were insignificantly increased with addition of feed additives. The microbiologica1 examination indicated a huge increase in Lactobacilli bacteria by supplementing laying hens' diet with lactose or Super Bio-Buds, however, salmonella, total aerobic bacteria and E coli bacterial count were significantly reduced, except the high level of lactose (2 %) it had no effect on E. coli bactetial count. Villi height was significantly (P< 0.05) increased by the addition of Super Bio-Buds, however, addition of lactose increased it but the increase was not significant. Results suggested that inclusion of lactose or Super Bio- Buds in the diet had a positive effect on most studied traits.
