Abstract |
Collected rabbit semen for artificial insemination should be faeces and urine free. Recently, different techniques have applied in semen evaluation, such as: water content of rabbit spermatozoa; electrical conductivity of rabbit semen; computerized rabbit semen evaluation and hypo-osmotic shock test (HOS-Test). The response of rabbit spermatozoa to hypo osmotic shock test (HOS-Test) is an inexpensive and quicker mean for semen evaluation and an excellent indicator for reproductive capability of rabbit bucks.
There are several diluents (sodium chloride, glucose-yolk-citrate, lactose-yolk-citrate, sucrose-yolk-citrate, tris-yolk-fructose and skim-milk-citrate) could be used in semen dilution and preservation. Further studies must be focused on determination of the optimal sperm-cell concentration in an artificial insemination dose to maximize the utilization of rabbit bucks used in the artificial insemination and also to minimize their number in the commercial Rabbitries.
Rabbit semen preservation is faced with some problems related to decreasing viability and quality of semen, during storage at different temperatures. Rabbit semen quality could improve by adding some substances during conservation or by separating live spermatozoa from seminal plasma.
In recent years, a great attention was directed towards the artificial insemination in rabbits either on the scientific research or on the field trial levels especially in the large commercial Rabbitries. AI in rabbits can be a useful aid to colony management. The artificial insemination technique in rabbits needs an ovulation inducer because female rabbits are induced ovulators. Ovulation can be induced artificially and reliably by using Gn-RH as alternative to the use of hCG or a vasectomized rabbit buck. The repeat administration of gonadotropins for rabbit does ovulation may cause fertility problems related to antibodies production. Mother-litter separation as a bio-stimulation is considered the best recent technique could be used in artificial insemination. It has reported that, rabbit breeders could control sex ratio in their flocks. In this review article, simple inexpensive techniques for rabbit semen collection and artificial insemination are described.
