Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary ascorbic acid and betaine supplementation on productive, reproductive performance and semen characteristics of APRI line rabbits under high ambient temperature. Eighteen lactating and non-lactating APRI line rabbit does of about 8-9 months old with an average live body weight of 2914 g, were used. Three experimental diets (6 does per diet) were used in this experiment. Rabbit does were fed ad libitum the basal diet without (control), with 250 Dig ascorbic acid /kg diet or 1000 mg betaine /kg diet. Digestibility coefficients for DM, CP, CF, NFE, GE, TDN, DCP and DE were significantly improved by 5.69, 9.56, 12.07, 3.51, 3.60, 5.53, 9.56 and 3.63%, respectively, in. rabbits fed diet with 1000 mg betaine/kg diet as compared with those. fed unsupplemented diet Plasma total protein, albumin and globulin were significantly increasing when betaine was supplemented in diet, while they were insignificantly increased when ascorbic acid was supplemented. Pregnant rabbit does given-diet containing 1000 mg betaine /kg diet showed the highest (P<0.01) weight gain than those fed other experimental diets during the pregnancy period. Milk yield increased (P<0.01) by 42.8% in rabbit does fed 1000 mg betaine /kg diet as compared with those fed control diet. Both size and weight of litters at the birth, 21 days and weaning (30 days) were improved by supplementing dietary ascorbic acid or betaine. The pre-weaning mortality rate was higher in the control diet compared to diets with 250 mg ascorbic acid/kg diet or 1000 mg betaine/kg diet (36.16% vs. 20.81 and 13.81%; P<0.001, respectively). Supplementing ascorbic acid and betaine in diets increased (P<0.001) sperm concentration. . It could be concluded that supplementing betaine in rabbit does diet significantly improve productive and reproductive performance of rabbits does during pregnancy and lactation periods and minimal mortality of pups under high ambient temperature during summer in Egypt. Moreover, betaine supplementation significantly improves semen quality. Therefore, it could be recommended providing rabbit does diet with betaine up to 1000 mg/kg diet is advisable in hot climates, Egypt.
