Response of lactating goats to rations supplemented with the Egyptian chufa tubers (Cyprus esculentus L.)

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of natural additive in the lactating goats's rations on productive performance specially the milk production and quality of milk. Eighteen lactating Zaraibi goats after one week of weaning were divided randomly into three groups of six animals each. Goats received daily the control diet plus 0, 10 and 15 g/h of the Egyptian Chufa tubers for the control, treatment I and treatment II, respectively. The control diet consisted of concentrate feed mixture and corn silage (60:40). The experimental period lasted until the 18th week of lactation. Feeding lactating goats on l5g/h/d (treatment II) resulted in significant increases (P<0.05) in the content of ruminal total volatile fatt1y acids, and in the digestibility coefficients of erode fiber, other extract and organic matter comparing with the control and treatment I (10g/h/d). Daily milk yield increased by 12.09 and 14.29 and daily milk fat yield increased by 17.18 and 24.16% for the treatment I and II, respectively comparing with the control. Moreover, the feeding of Zaraibi goats on 15g Chufa tubers /h/d significantly (P<0.05) increased the serum glucose by 8.28-' comparing with the control. The obtained results concluded that feeding lactating Zaraibi goats on Chufa tuber increased the milk production without any adverse effect on milk quality and metabolic parameters.
