Abstract |
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation with organic chromium "Cr" (chromium yeast), Cholecalciferol "Cc" (vitamin D3) or their combination on some reproductive traits, some blood serum constituents, liver functions and thyroid activity, immune status, egg production percentage, egg mass and egg shell strength (egg shell percentage and thickness) of heat stressed laying Japanese quail in summer season during July and August months. The effect on performance and embryonic mortality was also studied. The mean values of high ambient temperature and relative humidity in the house were 34.70 ±2.30° and 67.40±5.6% respectively under 16 h of light daily. For this purpose 270 females and 90 males (8 weeks of age) were randomly assigned to nine treatment groups for eight weeks (30 females and 10 males in each group). The 1st group (T1) was fed the basal diet that contained 1100 IU of Cc/Kg diet (the control group), while the 2nd group (T2) was given the basal diet with 200 μcg organic "Cr", the 3r group (T3) was given the basal diet with 400 μcg organic "Cr", The 4th group (T4) was given the basal diet with 450 IV of "Cc", the 5t group (T5) was given the basal diet with 900 IV of "Cc" whereas, the 6th,7th, 8th and 9th ones were provided with 200 μcg Cr + 450 IU Cc; 200 μcg Cr + 900 IU Cc; 400 μcg Cr 4- 450 IU Cc and 400 μcg Cr + 900 IU Cc/Kg diet, respectively. Results showed that, body weight, weight gain, egg production percentages, egg mass, external egg shell quality and feed conversion ratios were significantly improved in heat stressed quail hens received either organic Cr, Cc at the high levels or their combination at any levels, especially those on the highest levels of both supplements (T9) comparable to the control group. Moreover quail hens of T9 recorded the highest values of fertility and hatchability percentage but total embryonic mortality was reduced compared with the other treatments. Similarly, serum total proteins, albumin, globulin (indicating better immune response) and calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), and thyoid hormones (T3 and T4) levels were increased with supplemental Cc at 900 IU/kg diet with or without 200 or 400 µcg Cr, while the control hens showed the lowest values.Conversely, the control hens had the highest serum levels of total lipid, cholesterol LDL glucose as well as AST. and ALT activities. On the other hand, quail hens of the high level of yeast Cr singly or with any level of Cc, particularly (T9) had the lowest values of these serum constituents.
In conclusion, whether separately or as a combination, supplemental vitamin D3 and organic chromium could improve productive and reproductive performance, as well as adjusted the physiological responses of heat stressed laying Japanese quail in hot summer season especially m T9 which quail hens fed (400 μcg organic Cr + 900 IU Cc/Kg diet).
