Abstract |
This work was carried out to study the possibility of using dried Azolla meal (DAM) to replace a part of the dietary protein source of both Golden Montazah (GM) starter/grower and Layer periods; Exp.1 and 2, respectively.
Two hundred and fifty unsexed GM chicks were fed starter (2860.05 ±5.62 Kcal ME/kg. 18.85% ±0.05CP) and grower (2897.46± 13.70 Kcal ME/kg, 12.99%±0.08CP) diets containing 0,5,15 and 20% DAM (Exp.1).The results indicated that increasing DAM levels in the diets reduced live body weight, body weight gain, relative growth rate, feed conversion and economical efficiency. However under the experimental conditions, it seems that DAM may be added to starter and grower diets of GM chicks at levels less than 5% especially when there is a shortage of conventional feed ingredients.
Five iso-caloric (2844 ±5.61 Kcal ME/kg), iso-nitrogenous (16.29%±0.15CP) layer diets containing 0, 5, 10, 15, and 20% DAM were fed to GM pullets to test the effect of adding DAM up to 20%on the egg production and egg quality traits (Exp.2).
The results were as follows:
1.Increasing DAM over 10%significantly(P<0.05) decreased egg number, egg weight and egg mass as well as feed conversion and protein efficiency ratio.
2. Increasing DAM decreased albumen percentage, while yolk and shell percentage were increased. Using more than 10%of DAM decreased moisture and CP contents, but increased EE, ash, NFE, and physiological calorific values of eggs produced. Moreover, DAM significantly (P<0.05) decreased egg yolk cholesterol.
The DAM can be added to diets offered to GM pullets up to 15% without harmful effects especially when there is a shortage of conventional ingredients.
