English : Assessment of Liriomyza trifolii (burg.), (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in cotton (Gossypium barbadense) fields in different governorates
Arabic : "تقدير تعداد حشرة صانعة أنفاق الأوراق Liriomyza trifolii (Burg.) في حقول القطن في محافظات مختلفة"
Abstract A study was conducted to evaluate the infestation of L. trifolii in cotton (Gossypium barbadense) fields in different lactations i.e. Qualyubia, Dakahlia, Beny Swef, Fayoum and Kafr El-Sheikh Governorates, during 2006 and 2007. Leaves were sampled every 15 days from early April to mid-August and kept in the laboratory to observe for emerging leaf miners. Leaf miners were initially found on cotton leaves from 20 to 90 days after sowing. The numbers of larval mines varied from one to twelve /100 leaves. The largest number of infested leaves was observed in Qualyubia Governorate, where 12 and 10% of the sampled leaves were infested in 2006 and 2007, respectively after 35 days from planting. In Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, the infested leaves were zero during 2006 and 2007, respectively, and this maybe due to the neighboring plantations where they were cotton only so no alternative hosts for this pest; on the other hand, at Qualyubia Governorate the high rate of L. trifolii infestation comparing with other Governorates could be attributed to the variation of pest host plants especially vegetables which act as source of infestation. Also both in the field or laboratory experiments, it is noticeable the high dead larvae numbers inside the mines at all locations that exceeded the number of alive larvae, this lead to an important question "why the pest attack cotton?" although the high dead ratio of larvae. Is this attack is obligatory due to the lake of host plants at early summer? Or are there substance / substances in cotton leaves cause the mortality of larvae? So the authors think about more experiments about this issue.
