Abstract |
Sixty males and females of growing New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits aged 5 weeks with average body weights of 562.3±5.7g were used in the present study, divided into three comparable experimental groups (10 male and 10 female rabbits in each group). The 1st group fed a commercial diet (as a control), while the 2nd and the 3rd groups were fed the same basal diet supplemented with 0.6% fennel (Foeniculum Vulgare) and caraway (Carum carvi) seeds respectively. Live body weight, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio during the period from 5-13 weeks of age of growing rabbits were higher (P<0.05) and arranged descendingly as obtained by fennel, caraway seeds diets than control group, respectively. The lowest mortality rate was recorded by rabbits fed diet supplemented with caraway seeds followed by those fed diet supplemented with fennel seeds than control group. Male rabbits recorded higher (P<0.05) feed intake compared with female rabbits, whereas, the lower mortality rate and better feed conversion ratio were obtained with female rabbits. Male rabbits fed diet included fennel seeds showed improve (P<0.05) in values of pre-slaughter weight and carcass traits at 13 weeks of age compared with caraway seeds and control groups, respectively. Total protein, glucose, AST, total lipids, cholesterol and Thyroxin hormone (T4) were significantly affected by dietary supplementation, whereas, albumin, globulin, Alb/1Go ratio, ALT, urea and creatinine values were not significantly affected. Adding fennel or caraway seeds gignificantly (P>0.05) decreased total count of harmful microorganisms (Escherchia coli, Salmonella and Colstredium spp) in caecum. The best economic efficiency of growing rabbits was recorded by feeding diet supplemented with fennel seeds, followed by those fed diet supplemented with caraway seeds. Conclusively, inclusion fennel seeds in growing female rabbit diets improved growth performance traits and economical efficiency.
