Abstract |
Pathogenicity of the entomopathogenic nematodes, Steinernema sp. (Steinernematidae) and Heterorhabditis indicus (Heterorhabditidae) was investigated against the cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and the alfalfa leafweevil, Phytonomus variabilis (Herbst.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) in the laboratory at 25 + 1 °C and 60 – 70 % R.H.
Three concentrations of the nematodes were utilized; 12.5, 25, and 50 infective juveniles (IJs) / cm² of soil surface in plastic cups. Percentages of mortality to full-grown larvae of S. littoralis reached 100 % by both nematode species 72 hours post- treatment at all tested concentrations. Two days old pupae were less susceptible than full-grown larvae as percentages of mortality did not exceed 46.7 % after 3 days of treatment. However, no mortality was detected in the treated 6-day old pupae. In case of P. variabilis, the full-grown larvae were also susceptible to both Steinernema sp. and H. indicus ; % mortality reached 95 % by H. indicus and 93.3 % by Steinernema sp. 72 hours post-treatment. The adult weevils were found to be more susceptible to Steinernema sp. than to H. indicus ; percentages of mortality reached 90.4 % by Steinernema sp. and 33.3 % by H. indicus at a concentration of 50 IJs / cm² of soil surface, 72 hours post-treatment.
