Abstract |
Three varieties of potatoes were tested for infestation susceptibility by the major pests, at Fayoum Governorate. The potato varieties tested were: Harmis, Alpha and Diamant, each cultivated in one feddan. Cultivation period was from January to May 1997. Twenty-five randomized leaves were picked from plants of each variety at 7-day intervals. This experiment includes the use of potato tuber moth sex pheromone traps in order to determine the suitable time for biological control of this pest using Granulosis virus (G.V.) and was applied twice during the period of cltivation. Data of pest infestation was treated by Duncan’s multiple range tests. Results obtained showed that Hermis and Alpha potato varieties are more susceptible to pest infestation than the Diamant variety. These two varieties are susceptible for infestation by adults of aphid A. craccivora, eggs of T. urtica, eggs and nymphs of E. decipiens and larvae of potato tuber moth P. operculella. Regardng the effect of dates on pest infestation it is noticed that infestation increase as potato varieties increased in age except the case of adults of aphid A. carccivora and adults of each of B. tabaci and T. urtica. Generally the use of sex pheromone traps and application of G.V. reduces infestation by the potato tuber moth during sampling dates and can be considered as a tool for its control addition to other control methods used.
