English : Effects of selenium and vitamin E supplementation on immune response and performance of baladi calves
Arabic : تأثير إضافة عنصر السيلينيوم وفيتامين E علي المناعة والأداء في العجول البلدية
Abstract The present investigation was carried out to study the effect of vitamin E and selenium (Se) supplementation on immune response, Se levels in blood and on growth rate of Baladi calves. Twenty Baladi calves (males and females) were assigned at 4 days of age to two groups. Group one was considered as control, while group two was supplemented with 100 Iuvitamin E and 0.3 ppm Se per calf/day. The experiment lasted until weaning the calves at the age of 15 weeks. Radial Immuno Diffusion (RID) test was applied to determine serum IgG, IgM and IgA concentrations. The average of their values, throughout the experimental period, were significantly (p<0.05) higher in treated calves than those in control (62.5,3.2 and 3.1 vs.45.0,2.7 and 2.3 mg/ml, respectively ) . Se supplementation increased concentration of Se in treated-calve serum to an average of 0.21 compared to 0.10 g /ml for control. The activity of glutamic oxalaocetic transaminase (GOT) was affected by vit. E and Se treatment their were no significant differences between the two groups in hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells and white blood cell counts, while significant (P<0.05) differences were found in differential white blood cells (Lymphocyt, monocyt and eosenophil ) counts. The average of daily weight gain was significantly (p<0.05) higher in treated than in control group (0.57 vs. 0.46 Kg /day, respectively). The present results indicate the beneficial effects of vit E and selenium supplementation as immunocompetant antioxidant, non-specific humeral immunostimulant and for the improvement of body weight gain in neonatal Balbdi calves.
