Abstract Data on 120 rabbits of new zealand white, california and their crossbreds of both sexes were used. They were produced and raised at maryout research station, desert research center. Age at slaughter significantly (p<0.001) influenced pre-slaughter and hot carcass weight in a positive direction. At 54, 105 and 154 days of age, body weight preslaughter average 1141.3, 1676.8 and 2972.6 g resp., carcass weight 517, 846, 1108 and 1642 g resp. Hindquarter proportion in carcass of rabbits from californian sire was increased compared with carcass of rabbits from new zeland white sires. Forequarter proportion and loin cuts differed little between genetic groups. Effect of sex was significant for pre-slaughter, liver, heart, giblets, leg, hot-carcass, thoracic and hindquarter cuts weights. Males had heavier thoracic, loin, prlt and hindquarter cut weight than females. Heritability estimates for hot carcass and pre-slaughter weights were low. The h2 estimates were high for kidney fat (.79) abdominal fat (.49) forequarter (.79) and head width (.53), whereas moderate h2s (0.20-0.39) were found for the weight of loin, head and ear length. Body measurements were high and positively genetic when correlated with cut weight. Increased hindquarter cut weight was associated with increased ear length (rg = 0.83) and of width (rg = 0.80). Rear foot was highly positively correlated with other measurements and cut weights. Crossbreeding decreased abdominal, kidney fat and weight loss percentages of carcass. Results suggest possibility of improving lean yield by direct selection for some measurement such as length and width ear and rear foot length.
