Abstract |
During the last decades the global environment has been polluted by an astonishing number of natural and xenobiotic compounds (Ura et al, 2002). Air fall-out, traffic and industrial fumes are the main source of these pollutants ( Abdallah et al., 1999). Lead, copper and Zinc were classified among the most toxic metal pollutants (Jaworski, 1987). Copper- containing sprays of various formulations have been used to control fungal diseases in pome and stone fruit orchards, vineyards and vegetable crops for over 100 years ( Merry et al.1983). The answer of fundamental question in applied research: to what extent environmental pollution might modify biological activity of the soil organisms, particularly important are the entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) is the subject of this work. Thus this investigation aims to study the sensitivity of Heterorhabditis baujardi juveniles to certain metal ions Mg, Mn(II), Zn, Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Pb(II) and accordingly, the possible role of the EPN as a bioindicator of metal toxicity in the soil environment. This will be documented via determination of the influence of these metal ions on mortality, infectivity and reproduction. As well as, the impact of Mg and Mn(II) ions as an activators and stressors on the most toxic metal ions Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn, will be studied.
