English : Potential risk of histological alterations in the pituitary and thyroid glands of rBST-treated growing buffalo calves
Abstract The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of recombinant bovine somatotropin administration on the histological constitution of the pituitary and thyroid glands of the growing buffalo calves. Eight buffalo calves around 8 months of age with an average body weight of 132.5 ± 10.75 kg were divided into two groups. The first group was injected with rBST every two weeks at 1 % of their body weight. Simultaneously the second group was injected with physiological saline and used as control. At the end of the injection period, the animals were weighed and slaughtered. Calves treated with rBST scored higher (P>0.05) final body weight. pituitary and thyroid glands weight compared to the control group, supporting the growth promoting effects of rBST. Marked histological changes were induced in the pituitary gland of the calves treated with rBST. Hyperemia in blood vessels and capillaries and oedema sometimes associated with hemorrhages were seen in the pituitary gland of the treated calves. The histological pictures of the pituitary gland of control calves were normal. The response of the thyroid gland to rBST administration resulted in more activation of the gland as the follicles showed cuboidal lining of epithelial cells, while the lumen was impeded by eosinophilic colloidal material. The histological picture revealed inactivity of the thyroid gland in the control group. It was concluded that rBST administration might add some physiological stress, as the animal increases its anabolic activity, resulting in some adverse consequences on the pituitary and thyroid glands of the treated calves.
