English : The consequences of treatment with recombinant bovine somatotropin (RBST) on the endocrine and sexual activity of prepubertal buffalo calves
Arabic : تأثير المعاملة بمستحضر هرمون النمو على النشاط الجنسى و الهرمونى في عجول الجاموس قبل البلوغ
Abstract This study evaluated the effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin (rbst) on the pattern of sexual developmental behavior, semen quality, and libido score in the prepubertal buffalo calves. Eight buffalo calves around 12 months of age and an average body weight of 206.4 kg were injected subcutaneously with rbst every other week till reaching puberty. Similar number of calves was injected with Saline solution and served as control. Development of sexual behavior occurred at earlier age in the treated group, however, the weight at which these signs were observed was only different when these calves expressed their first sign of sexual interest in addition to the separation of the penile sheath, with no differences at later stages of sexual behavior preceding puberty. Scrotal circumference and testosterone concentrations showed no detectable differences as a result of exogenous rbst treatment. The impact of rbst injection on semen volume, sperm concentration and motility were not obviously positive. The libido score (expressed as reaction time. sexual aggressiveness and tactile stimulation) was enhanced after rbst injection. The ability of treated animals to reach puberty earlier, expressing higher libido despite of androgenic differences suggested that puberty in the buffalo calf might not be solely regulated by androgenic factors and it may involve androgen-independent pathways.
