Abstract |
The fumigant toxicity of four volatile oils obtained from Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus sp), Geranium (Pelargonium radula Cav.), Lemon grass (Cymbopogon citratus Stapf) and Bitter orange (Citrus aurantium L.) were evaluated against the two spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae Koch as a suggested approach for controlling mites in greenhouses. Results showed that vapor of Lemon grass oil was the most effective against all tested stages of mites compared with the other oils, its LC50 values were 3.8, 2.6 and 5.6 μl/l (oil/air), against adult females, protonymphs and eggs, respectively. On the other hand, bitter orange oil represented the lowest level of efficiency against different mite stages whereas its LC50 values were 9.0, 5.4 and 11.6 μl/l, against adult females, protonymphs and eggs, respectively. While Geranium and Eucalyptus oils came in-between. It was also observed that, protonymphs was the most susceptible stage and eggs were the most tolerant stage. A significant reduction in oviposition period and number of deposited eggs was observed for the survived mites, after exposing protonymphs to LC50 concentration of Lemon grass, Geranium and Eucalyptus oils.
