English : Comparison among certain natural products, Formic acid and Mavrik against Varroa mite, Varroa destructor, a parasite of honeybees on two stocks of Apis mellifera in Egypt.

Abstract During August, September and October 1999, black cumin oil, natural plant products (mentha and eucalyptus), formic acid and Mavrik were tested for their efficiency in controlling the bee mite Varroa destructor on two stocks of Apis mellifera. Results revealed that the formic acid efficiency rate averaged 34% on a hybrid derived from Egyptian queens Apis mellifera lamarckii and a hybrid derived from Carniolan drones Apis mellifera carnica (L. H.) and 71% on a hybrid derived from Carniolan queens (C. H.). These differences may be due to low levels of mite infestation on L. H. compared with that on C. H. However, Mavrik averaged 51% and 78%; black cumin oil averaged 53% and 64%; while fumigation with natural plant products, such as a mixture of fresh camphor and dry mentha leaves, averaged 57% and 59% on L. H. and C. H., respectively.
