Abstract Silver Montaza and Gimmiazh hens at the peak of egg production were used in this study. Birds were individually housed and fed laying diet. Egg production was recorded daily and blood samples were collected from ten hens of each strain at 22, 20, 18, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and 0 hr pre-oviposition to determine hormonal ( estradiol and progesterone ) changes. Plasma E2 was higher in Silver Montazah than Gimmizah hens throughout the studied sampling periods. Whereas, plasma P4 was significantly higher in Gimmizah hens. Major peaks of E2 and P4 accrued at 4 hr pre- oviposition. Estrogen/ progesterone ratio (E2/P4) was significantly higher in Silver Montazah hens than Gimmizah hens throughout the ovulatory cycle. When compared to typical curves of estradiol and progesterone during an ovulatory cycle, it was concluded that the two local strains studied are subjected to an unstable pattern of follicular tissue secretion of either estradiol or progesterone during their ovulatory cycle. Keywords: layer, estradiol, progesteron, strains.
