English : Utilization of mulberry dry leaves as as non-traditional fodder in feeding fattening rabbits
Arabic : الاستفادة من ورق التوت كمادة علف غير تقليدية في تغذية الارانب
Abstract The dry mulberry leaves contain 14.09% of crude protein that make it a good source of high value plant protein in the rabbit's feed. It also contain, 16.48% crude fiber, 4% fat and 17.94% ash. The present study was conducted to evaluate the use of sun dried mulberry leaves (S D M.L) as a non - traditional feed in feeding fattening rabbits, in order to lowering feeding costs during fattening period Thirty two New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits were used in this study to investigate the effect of different levels (0,20,30,40%) of S D M L on the performance of growing rabbits. The study concluded that improvement could be introduced to the average weight of rabbits by using S D M L as a supplement to the feed. Ratio of 20%, increased significantly body weight (p<0,05) rather than , (0, 30,01' 40 % of S D ML, at Different age, except at (5-9) weeks of age. The best results of feed conversion were reached by adding 20% of mulberry dry leaves to the feed. The differences due to treatment effects on feed conversion values were significant at different age intervals. The study detected also that difference in feeding quality affects the characters of the slaughter rabbits. The ratio of the weight after slaughtering to that before for each of the control group and the nutrition groups(20, 30 and' 40% mulberry dry leave) were about 43.7, 44.6, 42.70 and 42.70%, respectively at the age of 13 weeks. The mulberry dry leaves supplementation was found to improve the economic efficiency in 20% group, while the groups using 30 or 40% supplementation attained a lesser economic efficiency comparing with that of 20% supplementation. Total protein, albumin; globulin,. albumin /globulin Ratio, total lipid and cholesterol, due to treatment effect, were not significant ,although they surpassed those fed the control diet. From the nutritional and economical point of view, results of this study showed that mulberry leaves could be used, as a cheap ingredients in commercial growing rabbit diets up to 40 % without any adverse effect on rabbit performance.
