Abstract The effect of a pre-weaning diet (dietary starch content 11,14,17,20 and 23%) on growth performance and production parameters in rabbits was measured, to comply with digestive requirements of suckling rabbits. Diets were provided to 120 young rabbits 2- weeks old. The pre-weaning diets resulted in changes in production traits, where live body weight, weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion were significantly (P<0.0I) improved on dietary starch content of 17% as well as mortality. But the other contents recorded significant lower values in growth, feed conversion and increase in mortality during the fattening period. High significant differences were observed in digestibility coefficients, where improved with 17% dietary starch content. Dietary starch content had significant effect on most blood plasma constituents. The clostridia count in the cecum increased significantly (P<0.0I) as the content of starch increased leading to diarrhea and high mortality rate. The content of 17% starch in the weaning diet reduced the mortality rate in growing rabbits.
