Abstract |
An experiment was designed on Khaki-Campbell strain (foreign) and Domyati strain (local) to study the effects of season on the performance and changes in eggshell organic matrix proteins in relation to eggshell quality in these ducks. A number of 120 from each strain during winter and summer seasons (26-10°C) (January to March) and (39-25°C) (June to August) at 26 - 38 week-old were used. In March and August a total number of 30 eggs from each strain were taken to determine egg components and quality, body and egg weight and some blood parameters were recorded. In addition, organic matrix proteins of eggshells were assessed. The obtained results indicated that body and egg weights were significantly better in Khaki-Campbell than Domyati. These traits were significantly better in winter than summer seasons. Albumin wt %, shell wt %, yolk wt % shape and yolk index were significantly higher in Khaki-Campbell strain compared to Domyati ducks which recorded the lowest values except shell thickness which increased in Domyati ducks. These traits were significantly affected and decreased in summer than winter season except yolk wt. % and yolk index whichtended to increase in winter season.
The bands associated with main proteins specific to eggshell formation (Ovocleidin-116 and Ovocleidin-17) showed higher staining intensity in Domyati than in Khaki-Campbell and these proteins were lower in summer than winter season. Also, the intensity of the egg white proteins (ovotransferrin, ovalbumin and lysozyme) were higher in Domyati than in Khaki-Campbell and these proteins were lower in winter season. These observations suggest that changes in eggshell' quality could be due to changes in concentration of organic matrix proteins.
It could be concluded that Domyati strain might be used for future selection as breed and improvement of its highly resistant to extreme environmental conditions and shell quality. Thus, the changes in organic matrix proteins of the eggshell must be taken into consideration through poultry breeding programs and crossbreeding systems.
