English : Effect of Damsissa (Ambrosia maritima, L.) as a feed additive on performance and some metabolic parameters in lambs
Arabic : تأثير اضافة نبات الدمسيسة كاضافات اعلاف على الكفاءة الانتاجية و بعض مؤشرات الايض في الحملان
Abstract Fifteen growing Barki cross breed male lambs (5 months old) were used to investigate the effect of Damsissa leaves or seeds supplemented diets as feed additives for 120 days on body weight, rumen activity, some biochemical parameters and some hormonal levels. Lambs were randomly assigned into 3 experimental groups (5 lambs! group) to fed diet consisted of 20% barseem hay (BH) +30%rice straw (RS) +50% of concentrated feed mixture dry matter intake (DMI) for control group. While 2.5% leaves or seeds of Damsissa leaves or seeds as a replacement of CFM was offered for the second and third groups respectively. Results of supplementation with Damsissa seeds or leaves revealed on increased in lambs body weight with significant (P<0.05) increase in rumenal ammonia nitrogen concentration (NH3-N) and total volatile fatty acids (T.V.F.Aa) values with no differences in rumen PH. Concerning serum biochemical parameters Damsissa leaves diet induced significant (P<0.05) increase in urea value more than seeds diet. Serum AST activity revealed significant (P<0.05) decrease in case of Damsissa leaves, while seeds diet exhibited significant (P<0.05) decrease of serum AL T activity. On the other hand Damsissa seeds diet elevated significantly (P<0.05) both serum IgG and IgM levels mean while leaves diet increased {P<0.05) only IgM value. Regardinghonnonal assay, Damsissa seeds diet showed significant (P<0.05) increase of testosterone, FSH, LH, T3 and T4 concentration while Damsissa leaves supplementation significantly elevated (P<0.05) only FSH, T3 andT4 levels. Based on the obtained results it is recommended to use Damsissa seeds and leaves diet (2.5% of DMI) as a natural feed additive to lambs diet safely to improve lambs performance, immune response and little cost of feed intake.
