Abstract |
Data of the present study were obtained on a total of 977 F1 straight – bred ( 423) and cross-bred (554) weanling rabbits, produced through a crossbreeding experiment from three breeds, one exotic, New- Zealand white (NZW) and two local, sheikh, sakha Research station, Ministry of Agriculture, Egypt.
The study aimed at the evaluation of the heterotic effect of biweekly progeny body length (BL) measures from weaning ( at 6 weeks of age) up to marketing age ( at 12 weeks of age), as well as the estimation of the genetic and non- genetic factors affecting this trait.
Tests of significance revealed that breed group ( BG) and month of birth ( MOB) succeeded to prove significance at all ages studied. Feed type ( F) and parity ( at 8 weeks of age) as well as sex at 6 weeks of age affected significantly body length ( BL) measures. BG * Sex and BG * feed type interaction insignificantly affected BL, mm. At all age considered. Average regression of BL on their age respective body weight ( BW) and litter size at birth ( LSB) was highly significant at ages considered, as well as partial regression within BG on BW at 8 and 12 and on LSB at 6 and 8 weeks of age.
Maternal abilities ( Gm) showed generally the same trend of superiority ranking displayed by least squares means. However, BB rabbits attained of superiority of direct additive effect (GI) at most ages considered but significantly at 10 and 12 weeks of age only.
Keywords: Rabbit crossing, body length, direct and maternal additive effect.
