Abstract |
This study was planned to investigate the effect of different sources and levels of protein in fish diets on the growth performance and economical efficiency on Tilapia gallelea (average body weight 4.7g) reared in aquarium under laboratory condition. Nine diets representing three protein source, animal, plant and mixture of animal and plant protein sources at three protein levels 22,27 and 32 % within each source.
The obtained results revealed that.
1-Fish fed on diets contained animal plus plant protein source at level of 32 and 27% gave the significant (P<0.05) heavier body weights (13.35 and 12.54g I fish), respectively followed by 32 % crude protein from aroma! source (12.21g I fish) or plant source (11.40g I fish) during the whole experimental period.
2- Feed conversion improved significantly for fish fed on animal protein plus plant protein or animal protein only in the diets within any studied level (22, 27 and 32% ) than that of plant protein. sources only in the diets.
3-Fish fed on animal protein plus plant protein sources at level of 32% protein resulted in the higher values of dry matter (28.59%), crude protein (64.64%) and ash (19.85%) and the lower value of ether extract (15.21%) and energy content (508.15 kcal/l00g) in the carcass of whole fish.
4- Fish fed on plant protein source at level of 32% resulted in the best economical efficiency value, while the animal protein source resulted in the lowest value of economical efficiency.
Generally, it could be concluded that, containing higher protein level (32%) in the diet from animal plus plant protein source produced optimum growth performance and feed utilization of Tilapia gallelea.
