English : Effect of replacing Guar hay (Cyamopsis tetragonolobal.) as a summer forage in sheep feeding on digestibility, nutritive value, performance and carcass characteristics

Abstract Twenty four growing Rahmani male lambs four months old and 21.67 ± 0.87kg average initial body weights were used to assess the digestibility and feeding value of guar hay when partial replaces of concentrate mixture (CFM) in sheep diets. Animals were assigned to four equal groups each of 6 lambs. The feeding trial extending to 120 days. The following treatments of the experiment were, control treatment (D1) was concentrate feed mixture (CFM) plus wheat straw (WS) as roughage. Different portions 20, 40 and 60 % of the (CFM) were replaced by guar hay on a crude protein basis and nominated as D2, D3 and D4, respectively. Results indicated that digestibility coefficients and feeding values of all nutrients were significant (P<0.05), except that of NFE digestibilit of ration containing guar comparing the control group. The digestibility ;of CP and CF of D4 (60% guar), were improved comparable with control. The daily gain of lambs fed 60% guar hay (D4) was higher (P<0.01) than those fed 20%, 40% guar hay or control. Feed conversion expressed values were better (P<0.05) in lambs received D4 diet, followed by lambs received D3 and D2 diets, respectively, than lambs fed control diet (Dl). (D4) showed the better economic efficiency (P<0.05) than lambs' diet containing control (0%) or 20%, which had better daily gain and feed efficiency. Carcass characteristics of slaughtered animals showed that, dressing percentage, and lean meat increased while fat% decreased when guar hay increased in diet. It could be concluded that, , it can replaced guar hay by 60% instead of concentrate feed mixture in growing lamb diets to improve their digestibility coefficients, nutritive value, feed and economic efficiency and their carcass characteristics
