Abstract The objective of this study was to determine the effect of partial replacement of fish meal by full-fat soybean meal (FFSB) or cottonseed meal (CSM) supplemented with iron on growth performance and body composition of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis nilolicus L). Five isonitrogenous, isocaloric diets were formulated to contain FFSB and CSM. each to represent zero (control), 50 and 75% of fish meal protein, respectively. The diets were fed to juvenile Nile tilapia (9.16g average weight) which were stocked in five replicate fiberglass tanks at 50 fish per tank. Diets were fed to fish twice daily at a rate of 3% of their body weight for 12 weeks. The best values of final body weight, weight gain and average daily gain were recorded for fish group fed the control diet followed in a descending order by fish groups fed 50 and 75% of fish meal protein by using FFSB and those having CSM to replace 50% of fish meal protein. respectively. There were no significant differences in SGR. FCR and PUE between fish groups fed the control diet and those fed FFSB. However, chemical composition of the whole fish bodies was influenced significantly by the applied treatments. From the results obtained, full-fat soybean meal can be used as a protein source to replace up to 75% of fish meal protein, while cottonseed meal may substitute up till 50% of fish meal protein in Nile tilapia diets. Keywords: fish meal protein, full-fat soybean. cottonseed meal. iron supplementation, growth performance, Nile tilapia.
