Abstract |
Twenty male Friesian calves of about 13 months old and 267 kg live body weight were randomly divided into four similar groups, (five for each) to study the effect of adding Pro-Bio-Fair (Yeast culture) and fenugreek seeds on feed intake, daily gain, feed conversion, body dimension, blood parameters and carcass characteristics. The duration of the field experiment was 6 months. The treatments were: calves of T1 (control) were fed on : (concentrate feed mixture) CFM + berseem hay + rice straw, T2 were fed on: the control ration + 10 gm Pro-Bio- Fair/ head/ day, calves of T3 were fen on: the control ration + 20 gm Pro - Bio - Fair / head/ day and those of T4: were fed on the control ration + 3% fenugreek seeds/ head/ day (as DM). Animals were fed according to NRC (1984).. Results showed that the highest values of average total gain, daily gain were recorded for T3 and the highest values of TDNI, DCPI and SVI kg/ head/ day while No significant differences were observed among treatments in DM, OM, CF and NFE digestibilities, but T3 was significantly higher in CP digestibility than T1 and T2. No significant differences were observed among treatments in heart girth (HG), Body length (BL), height at wither (Hw), height at hook (HH), width at shoulders (WS), width at hook (WH), width at pinbone (WP) and rump length (RL). Plasma total protein and urea-N concentration were significantly higher for all supplemented rations than control group. Calves of T3 had insignificantly higher values than the other groups in both of blood plasma albumin and globulin. The highest value (P>0.05) of carcass length, round length, hot carcass weight, dressing % and boneless meat % were recorded for the calves of T3 while the lowest values were recorded for those of T1. Lean % and area of Longissinus dorsi insignificantly increased with all supplemented groups. Meat tenderness and water holding capacity were better in treated groups than control group. No significant differences were observed among treatments in meat moisture, Protein, EE and ash %.
