Abstract |
Test-day records of milk yield traits (milk yield, fat and protein percentages) and somatic cell count for 544 Egyptian buffalo cows having 7238 records were analyzed with a mixed linear model across the first five lactations. The model included herd, test-date, month of lactation and age at calving as fixed effects while, animal within herd was used as random effect. The results indicated that test-date had a highly significant effect (P<0.000l) on all studied traits across lactations.
Month of lactation effect contributed significantly to variation in all milk yield traits except for LSCC. No effect of age at calving could be observed for LSCC and P%. The interaction effects of herd and month of lactation were not significant on LSCC and F% in all lactations. Test-day milk yield increased with the age of the animal until the 7th yr of age and then slightly decreased for buffalo aging 8 yr or more. The effect of age class on LSCC and P% was negligible, whereas significant differences among age classes were found for F%. Lactation curve for test-day milk yield for first lactation buffalo cows peaked lower and were more persistent than for multiparous animals. The shape of the lactation curve differed between fat and protein percentages due to lactation number with significant differences at different months of lactation. Lactation curve for LSCC showed an inflection point which distinguishes between a first phase of decrease and a second asymptotic increasing phase. Using test -date effect through a mixed linear model is recommended for analyzing test-day records for milk yield traits and somatic cell count for Egyptian buffalo cows.
