English : Efficiency of vitamin E and selenium administration on growth performance, puberty and some anatomical and histopathlolgical traits of female genitalia in New Zealand white rabbits
Abstract A total of 80 New Zealand White female rabbits (NZW) at 6 weeks of age in Seds Research Station, Beni-Suef Governorate, belonging to Animal Production research Institute were assigned to four equal groups (each of 20 females). The first group was injected with saline solution as control. The second group was injected intramuscularly with 0.1 mg selenium/ kg body weight/ week as sodium selenite (Se). The third group was injected subcutaneously with 75 IU vitamin EI head/ week as alpha tocopherol acetate (Vit E) and at 4 months of age the dose increased to 100 IU Vit E/ head/ week. The fourth group was injected with Vit E+Se at the same doses of the previous groups. Blood plasma Vit E concentration was higher (P<0.01) in rabbits injected with Vit E alone and Vit E+Se than the control and Se-groups. Blood plasma Se level was higher (P< 0.01) in the rabbits injected with Se or Vit E+Se than the control group. Rabbits injected with Vit E+Se had heaviest body weight and had better immunity efficiency. Vitamin E in combination with Se injection increased plasma estrogen levels during pre- and post pubertal period and reached puberty earlier than the other groups. Also, Vit E+Se or Vit E injection increased progesterone concentration during pregnancy and improved reproductive performance Rabbits injected with Vit E+Se had higher ovaries weight and number of Graafian follicles than the other treatments. The histopathology examination of the ovary in rabbits injected with Vit E+Se revealed the presence of higher number of mature Graafian follicles at 4 months of age followed by those treated with Vit E alone. It could be concluded that Vit E+Se injection improved growth performance, sexual activity, achieve earlier puberty and had obvious improvement on the female genital system. Keywords: female rabbits. vitamin E+Se. growth performance, sexual activity.
