Abstract Functional foods has recently emerged as a novel sector of health-enhancing products. The target function of functional foods is largely dependent on the used ingredients. One of the important group of functional foods is that used to promote the function and integrity of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). The health-enhancing microorganisms, known as probiotics, substances enhancing the desirable fermentation in the colon, known as prebiotics, and combination of both (synbiotics) are important ingredients in functional foods for the GIT. Functional daily products are considered as the desirable vehicle to deliver pro, pre and synbiotics to consumers as they provide protection for the live microorganisms during their passage in the GIT. The present review highlights the thempeutic effects of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics and their use in functional dairy products.
