Estrus response and hormonal profile of native Egyptian Sohagi ewes treated for estrus synchronization by using vaginal sponges

| Abstract |
The objective of this work was to study the estrus response and the profiles of P4&E2 hormones in Sohagi ewes treated by vaginal sponges (enriched with synthetic. P4 ) or similar ,vaginal sponge+ PMSG for estrus synchronization. Sixteen Sohagi, ewes were used in this study. The animals were divided into two equal groups (A&B). Group A were treated with intravaginal 45mg flurogestone acetate sponge for 12 days before sponge removal. Group B were treated with similar sponges for 12 days plus 400 IU PMSG i.m injection at sponge removal. Serum progesterone (PJ and Estradiol 17-p (E2) concentrations were determined in blood samples on days. 0 (sponge insertion), every 3 days up to sponge removal then daily for 4 successive days). Estrous behavior of all ewes was detected every 4 hours after sponge removal. Number and percentage of does that expressed estrus symptoms time from end of treatment to the onset of heat and heat duration were recorded. Expressed estrous response' %was' 85.7 with vaginal sponge and 100 % with vaginal sponge + PMSG. Time post-treatment to onset of estrus was earlier with vaginal sponge+PMSG than with vaginal sponge only (44.50 and 48.00 h respectively). Litter size was significantly greater (P<0.05) with vaginal sponge+PMSG than vaginal sponge only. In conclusion, vaginal sponge treatment was an efficient method for synchronizing estrus in Sohagi ewes with or without PMSG with emphasis that vaginal sponge +PMSG yielded better results in the investigated parameters than those of vaginal sponge only. –
