English : Evaluation of Hay of five sorghum cultivars as a feed for lactating Buffaloes
Arabic : تقييم دريس خمسة انواع من السورجم كغذاء للجاموس الحلاب
Abstract The hay of live sorghums being sweet sorghum, teosinte, pioneer, sorghum FX-17 and sorghum SV-10017 was evaluated. Three cuts were taken from such sorghums 45, 70 and 95 days after sowing. Chemical composition data cleared significant differences in CP and EE. Sorghum SV-10017 and sorghum FX-17 hays seemed to be of better quality due to their higher CP content. The difference among tested varieties showed the best digestibilites and feeding values with sorghum SV-10017 hay and the lowest values with sweet sorghum hay. Super intake of sorghum FX-17 and sorghum SV –10017 hays and the lowest intake of sweet sorghum hay was observed. Sorghum SV –10017, sorghum FX-17 and pioneer hays tended to show better yield/feddan compared to the other tested hays. Cost/kg DM were infavour of sorghum SV- 10017 and sorghum FX-17 compared to the other tested hays.Five Egyption lactating buffaloes weighting 470 (10kg in average, in third lactation were used to study the effect of tested sorghums hay containing diets on their lactation performance . Wheat straw that urea, molasses and minerals was used in the control diet. Accordingly six dietary treatments was carried out. Trials were initiated at 45 ± 2 days post partum where buffaloes served as their own control and the tested diets were fed in successive duration. Covariance analysis was made to control errors and adjust treatment means to be comparable. Digestibilities and feeding values tended to be in favour of sorghums hay containing diets especially those contained sorghum SV-10017 and sorghum FX-17 hays when compared to the control diet. The effect of such diets on milk yield and its components was parallel to that found in their digestibilities and feeding values. Feed conversion for milk production was significantly higher (P<0.01) with the tested diets compared to the control one. From economical point of view the sorghum SV-1007 and sorghum FX-7 hays containing diets could be suggested for lactating buffaloes. Keywords: sorghums hay, digestibility, buffaloes, milk yield, milk composition, feed efficiency.
