Abstract |
A total number of one-hundred and sixty New-Zealand White and Californian buck rabbits (80 in each one) aged 3 months and 1.2 kg of body weight were used. Animals in each breed were divided randomly into four equally homogenous groups (20 in each one). The first group was kept as a control and fed a commercial diet. The second, third and fourth groups were fed the same diet in the first group administrated weekly with 30 IU vitamin E, 75g Selenium and 30 IU Vit. E + 75g/kg orally of body weight, respectively.
The results showed that, daily feed intake, daily weight gain and feed efficiency were higher (P< 0.05) in NZW and Cal buck administrated with Vit. E and/or Se than those of control group. The highest (P<0.05) values of the previous traits were recorded with Cal compared to NZW buck rabbits. NZW or Cal buck rabbits administrated with Vit. E and/or Se decreased (P<0.05) ear lobe temperature, skin temperature, rectal temperature, respiration rate, pulse rate and age at first mating compared to untreated group. The lowest (P<0.05) values of these traits were recorded with Cal buck rabbits.
NZW and Cal buck rabbits treated with Vit. E, Se. and Vit. E plus Se. improved (P<0.05) weight at first mating, scrotal circumference, libido, semen quality, total protein, albumin, globulin and testosterone concentrations. Semen quality was higher (P<0.05) while weight at first mating, scrotal circumference, libido and blood serum components were insignificantly better in Cal than NZW buck rabbits. Kindling rate, litter size and litter weight at birth were better (P<0.05) in does mated with the buck administrated with Vit.E+Se. than in those mated with untreated rabbits. Kindling rate, litter size and litter weight at birth for does mated with Cal were insignificantly higher than those mated with NZW buck rabbits.
