English : The effect of using some untraditional feedstuffs on the performance of Japanese quails in North Sinai

Abstract One thousand and fifty japanese quail chicks one-day old were weighed and distributed randomly to seven groups with three replicates of 50 chicks each. Birds were fed 7 experimental diets in which the first (T1) is the control; the other diets, date stone meal (DSM), prickly pear peels (PPP) and a mixture of both (1:1) was used each at 15% of the diet instead of yellow corn (YC) either without or with 0.05% prozyme supplementation. All diets were isonitrogenous and isocaloric. Feed and water were offered ad-lib. During the experimental period. The results indicated no significant differences (p< 0.05) in live body weight due to feeding quail chicks on PPP supplemented with prozyme and all other treatments. No significant differences (P<0.05)were observed among the unsupplemented groups. The groups fed DSM, and mixture of DSM and PPP supplemented with Prozyme significantly (P<0.05) surpassed those of unsupplemented groups. Body weight gain had nearly the same trend such as live body weight. Feed consumption was not affected by dietary treatments. Supplemented DSM or PPP diets with Prozyme was significantly (P<0.05) improved feed conversion compared with the unsupplemented diets, however, the differences were insignificant compared with the control diet. Results showed that a decrease in the kilocalories required for producing one gram of quail chicks weight as a result of supplementing DSM or PPP with Prozyme improved relative economic efficiency than the unsupplemented groups, however all are beneficial than the control. It could be concluded that partial substitution of yellow corn either by date stone meal or prickly pear peels as sources of energy in quails diets either supplemented or unsupplemented with enzyme mixture had a beneficial effect on the performance of quail chicks in North Sinai.
