English : The effect of dietary protein and yeast culture levels on performance of growing Japanese quails

Abstract A total of 360 unsexed day-old japanese quail chicks were randomly distributed into 6 experimental groups each in three replicates. Birds were reared in battery brooders and allocated in a 2x3 factorial arrangement of treatments in which two crude protein 24 and 22% versus three level of yeast culture being 0, 1.5 and 3.0 Kg/ton of feed were used. Results indicated that supplementing quails diets with yeast culture significantly (P< 0.05) increased body weight gains, improved feed conversion and efficacy of protein utilization compared to control birds. Birds fed low protein level significantly (P<0.05) consumed more feed compared with other groups fed diets contained 24% crude protein. Low level of yeast culture significantly (p< 0.05) improved feed conversion and efficacy of protein utilization. Low level of crude protein (22%) with low level of yeast culture (15Kg/ton), significantly (P< 0.05) increased body weight gains compared with that obtained from birds either fed unsupplemented diets or those fed diets containing the high level of crude protein (24%) with the high level of yeast culture (3Kg/ton ). Feed intake decreased while feed conversion and efficiency of protein utilization improved significantly (P< 0.05) when birds fed diets containing 22%protein with the high level of yeast culture. quails fed diets supplemented with yeast culture recorded higher digestion coefficient of crude protein, and ether extract, and crude fiber and nitrogen free extract but not significantly compared with those fed unsupplemented diets with yeast culture, it could be concluded that it has beneficial effect to supplement quail diets with yeast culture especially when insufficient protein diets were used.
