Response of broiler performance to diets containing raw and treated soyabean with enzyme or sodium metabisulfite

Abstract |
The experiment was conducted to study the effect of feeding broiler chicks on diets containing different forms of soybean, raw or processed ( Toasted, microwaved and extruded) and supplemented with either commercial enzymes (KemzymeR ) or sodium metabisulfite (SMBS). A total number of 224 unsexed 7 day- old Arbor Acres broiler chicks were distributed into 7 treatments of 32 chicks each in four replicates (8 chicks per replicate). The diets were formulated to be nearly iso-nitrogenous (22.0% and 18% CP at starter and finisher periods, respectively), with the same energy level of 3200 Kcal/Kg diet, except for the diet containing raw soybean (3011 and 3081 Kcal ME/Kg diet at starter and finisher periods, respectively). The results are summarized as follows:
1- Heat treatment significantly improved growth performance, dressing percentages, digestion coefficient of nutrients and economic efficiency and decreased pancreas weight and urease activity (UA), however, had no significant effect on mortality rate.
2- A significant improvement in growth performance was observed when extruded full- fat soybean seeds were included in the experimental diets compared to raw or toasted soybean seeds at starter and finisher period. However, the growth performance was significantly lower when microwave heated soybeans seeds were included in the experimental diets compared with the other treatments.
3- Adding SMBS to toasted soybean improved feed conversion at starter and finisher periods compared with toasted soybean seeds. Addition of dietary enzymes to toasted soybean improved body weight gain at 4 weeks of age.
4- No significant differences were observed in plasma total cholesterol, however, significant differences were observed among different treatments in plasma total lipids concentrations.
In conclusion, using either toasted or extruded full- fat soybeans instead of raw soybean improved growth performance, dressing percentages, digestible coefficient of nutrients and economic efficiency.
