The efficacy of Salmonella Enteritidis vaccines in experimentally infected layer chickens

| Abstract |
A locally prepared killed mineral oil adjuvant and DEAE-Dextran adjuvant Salmonella Enteritidis vaccines versus a commercially available oil emulsion bacterin (Layermune Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine were evaluated for protecting layer chickens against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium infection. The prepared vaccines proved their purity, sterility, safety and potency. Different groups of 12 week-old breed chickens had been subcutaneously vaccinated with two doses of each vaccine. They were administrated 2 weeks apart. Three weeks after the second vaccination, the chickens were challenged orally with 109 CFU of both S.Enteridis and S.Typhimurium strains. Chickens in different groups were monitored for antibody response, bacterial shedding pattern and clearance of challenged salomoella strains from internal organs. Elisa results of the tested chicken sera indicated significantly higher antibody response in all of the vaccinated groups than those of the non-vaccinated ones. Statistically, there was a least significant difference in the antibody titers produced by prepared vaccines as compared to the commercial one indicating their efficacy in providing a protective immune response against both of the challenge salomonella strains for at least 7 weeks post vaccination with decline or even elimination of fecal shedding but failed to protect vaccinated birds from organs invasion by challenged strains.
