| Abstract |
One hundred suckling Friesian calves (87 diarrheic and 13 non-diarrheic) aged 5 to 35 days old were examined for Cryptosporidiosis Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts were demonstrated using the Sheathers sucrose floatation method followed by staining with Modified Ziehl Neelsen stain in 44 diarrheic (50.57%) and 3 non-diarrheic (23.07%) calves. Inappetence, diarrhea, and dehydration were the most observed clinical signs in infected calves. Haematological picture [White blood corpuscles (WBCs), monocytes, granulocytes, Mean corpuscular volume (MCV), Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentrations (MCHC) and blood platelets (PLT)] showed non significant variations in diseased calves. Significant decrease (P<0.05) in haemoglobin and significant increase (P<0.05) in Haematocrite value (HCT) in both infected and non- infected diarrheic calves were obtained. Also significant decrease (P<0.001) in serum total proteins and albumin values of both infected and non-infected diarrheic calves were obtained. Also total globulin levels were significantly decreased (P<0.001) as a result of decrease in gamma globulin concentrations The results ,of total immunoglobulins (lgG and IgM) by ELISA showed significant decrease (P<0.01) in infected calves compared to non-infected ones. Infected animals as well as non-infected ones gave the same immune response to the injected sheep red blood corpuscles as a foreign antigen.
