Abstract |
A total of 3965 lactation records for 1029 Holstein cows raised in three commercial herds was used in the present study for identification of the shortest possible dry period that allow maximum milk production across adjacent lactations pairs of the first four parities, and to determine the optimum dry period length depended on parity.
The results indicated that a dry period of 31- 40 days length allowed to optimize milk yield across the first and the second, and the second and the third lactations, While, a dry period of 41 - 50 days was needed to maximize milk yield across the third and fourth lactations there are potential benefits from shortening the traditional dry period due to the extra days in milk at the end of lactation However, longer dry periods more than 60 days after the first and the second lactations, and more than 100 days after the third one caused significant decrease in milk yield sums.
