Abstract |
In Egypt the pumpkin fly, Dacus ciliatus (Loew) and the peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata (=Dacus zonatus) (Saunders) which belong to the genus Dacus (=Bactrocera) family Teplifitidae order Diptera were found infesting some vegetables like cucurbitaceous and solanaceous plants. Both flies resemble each other in infestation symptoms and all immature stages, furthermore adults have the same shape, size and color. Morphological differences appear in the thorax, wings and abdomen. Electrophrosis for total protein (SDS-PAGE) in all stages of both species indicated the presence of 10 protein bands in D. ciliatus and 11 protein bands in B. zonata ranging between 151.17 kDa and 19.72 kDa with common major protein bands at 20.67 kDa, similarity percentage was 72.92, similarity coefficient was 0.90 and commonality percentage was 9.52. Esterase isoenzyme pethern after electrophroesis showed the presence of 5 visualization bands in both species ranging from 59.34 kDa to 169.24 kDa with common major bands at 97.17 kDa, similarity percentage was 16.03, similarity coefficient was 0.80 and commonality percentage was 22.22. This could provide a new strategy for the identification of any stage (egg, larva, pupa and / or adult) in an easy and quick manner thus help in controlling both D. ciliatus and B. zonata when newly appearing as serious pests in Egypt
