Abstract The examination of 41 specimens collected from Arabian horrses, suffered from severe respiratory symptoms, revealed the isolation of 23 S.equi isolates (56.1%),Two subspecies were identified, S. equi subspecies equi, (17.1%)and S.equi subspecies zooepidemicus (39%)Two phase variants, mucoid and matt were also recorded. Determination of cell-associated hyaluronic acid capsul in all isolates affirmed that, mucoid variants conts contaned significantly (p<0.05) higher amounts of hyaluronic acid (601+0.25mg/g and 5.14+0.58mg/g) than the matt variants (1.82+0.44mg/gand 1.72+0.23mg/g). in the phagocytosis assay rnucoid variant isoates showed signilicantly (p<0.05)higher resistance to phagocytosis (9.4+2.1/macrophage and 14.4+2.6/macropliage) than the malt variant isolates which showed lower resistance to phagocytosis. The brain tissue sections demonstrated congestion in the blood vessels, thrombosis, oedema and infiltration of inflammatory cells in the minings. The liver revealed oedema and infiltration of the connective tissue of the capsule of Glison with polymorph leukocytes Antibiogram assay of S. equi signified that the most potent antibiotics were penicillin, ampicillin, gentamycin and erthromycin.
