Abstract |
SUMMARY:
Out of 620 Holstein cows, 184 were proved to be cystic by ultrasound scanning (US). All the cases failed to respond to the hormonal treatment with GnRH. Zearalenone was in¬criminated when its level in the ration was very high (190 ppm) as assayed by ELISA and HPLC. The cystic fluid was aspirated under US guidance and screened by ELISA for zea¬ralenone whose level ranged from 2 to 6 ppm with the recovery rate of 95.6%. Selected forty cystic fluid samples representing 4 groups were confirmed by HPLC together with the 12 control samples. Zearalenone level ranged from 1.8-6.4 ppm with recovery rate of 100%.
Prolactin, progesterone and oestradiol-17p were also assayed. The former two ormones
were in a very low and normal levels while oestradiol-17(3 was in a high normal level in groups I and II which may be augmented by zearalenone to cause such a condition. While in groups III and IV, zearalenone was highly predominating (6.2 and 4.3 ppm) over oestradiol-17P (<10 pg/ml) to be accused alone as the sole cause of cystic ovaries in animals of these two groups. Forty milk and serum samples were assayed by ELISA to confirm the presence of zearalenone in other organs than ovarian cysts. The problem was completely subsided when ration was replaced by toxin-free one with the addition of antimycotoxic agent. Preg¬nancy rale was raised from 22% to reach 57%.
