English : Serum Progesterone Profile During Postpartum Period In Dairy Cattle And Its Relation To Fertility
Abstract Summary: This study was designed to clarify the changes in serum progesterone patterns during the early post partum period and their relation to conception when insemination occurred at this estrus .Fourteen Frisian cows belonging to the experimental farm of animal production research institute, agriculture research center were used in this study. All females were subjected to estrous detection twice daily. Cows — showed estrous- after 28 days post partum were artificially inseminated. Serum progesterone was assayed twice weekly in all animals starting from birth until detection of pregnancy. Females were considered pregnant if its progesterone level was more than (3) ng/ml at day 20 after A.I. and confirmed with rectal palpation at 45 days after insemination. Postpartum estrous cycle lengths were short (less than 18 days) in 33.3% and long cycles (more than 25 days) in 16.6% and normal in 50% (18-25 days). Insemination per conception was 1.65 in this study; there was a transient rise in progesterone concentration before the first post partum ovulation in all animals. Conception occurred in the first estrus (2i.4%>, in the second estrus (42.35%), in the third estrus (21.4 %) and in the fourth estrus (14.3%). It is concluded thai not only high concentration of progesterone played an important role in conception but also the difference between the peak of progesterone in the luteal phase in previous cycle and its basal level in the estrus phase has a role in conception
