Abstract |
SUMMARY:
The effect of regular consumption of feed contains aflatoxin as a natural environmental contaminants on semen characteristics of mature rams has been discussed.50 samples of whole mixed ration and 50 samples of forages have been collected from different sheep farms. These samples were subjected to mycological examination and extracted for myco-toxin production.35 samples from 50 whole mixed ration samples (70%) were contained af¬latoxin in a range 7-88 PPB and 18 samples from 50 forage samples (36%) were contained aflatoxin in a range of 11-65 PPB. 50 semen samples were collected from the same farms where the ration and forage samples were taken and immediately evaluated for ejaculate volume, consistency, sperm concentration, sperm motility, alive sperm percentage and sperm abnormality. In addition, semen samples were extracted for the presence of Aflatox¬in.10 semen samples were collected from 10 control mature rams from farm of animal re¬production research institute and evaluated by the same previously mentioned procedure.
Aflatoxin were found in 30 semen sample from 50 semen samples (60%) in a range of 2-19 PPB while no detectable limits were seen in semen of control animals. The ejaculate vol¬ume was 0.77-1.00 ml while in control was 1-1.5 ml. Concerning the consistency, semen of experimental animals was milky while in control animals was creamy. The concentration of semen of experimental animals was l-2.5x 10 9 ml while in control was 3.5-4.5 x 10 9 ml. Concerning the motility, in experimental animals, some movement of spermatozoa is visi¬ble. Only 20-40 % of sperm cells are active and their motility is poor while in control, good motion dense very rapid , 90% or more of spermatozoa are active. The percentage of alive spermatozoa was 54% in experimental animals, while in control was 89%.The sperm abnor¬mality, the major abnormality was 21% in experimental animals while in control was 7% The minor abnormality was 18% while in control was 5%.
It could be concluded that, contamination of ration or fodder with aflatoxin cause detri¬mental effect on ram semen and consequently might reduce the fertility rate.
