Abstract |
Summary:
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation with fish oil rich in two essential long chain poly unsaturated fatty acids of omega-3 (n-3) series, C20: 5 n-3 and C22: 6 n-3 on some blood metabolites and hormones concentration in buffalo calves. Ten calves (4-5 months of age) were divided into equal groups. The first group was untreated and left as control and the second group was given the oil daily as 1% of dry matter for 1 month.
The results indicated that, dietary supplementation with fish oil for 1 month to calves significantly (P<0.05) increased serum palmitic, oleic and linoleic fatty acids concentrations compared to control group, while serum triglyceride, cholesterol and HDL concentration did not significantly affected. On the other hand, dietary supplementation with fish oil for 1 month to calves significantly increased serum glucose, total protein, globulin, zinc, glutathione reduced and tri-iodothyroxine concentrations compared to control.
